Hang Your Artwork {with hangers}

I came across this idea via Style Files.

What a creative way to hang your artwork – with pant/skirt hangers! I love this idea – not only does it look super chic, but it’s also a really inexpensive solution for getting your art up. Framing and matting is expensive and those plastic frames for prints oftentimes just look cheap and create glare.

Here it is up close.

Another bonus is that it’s so easy to change your artwork as your mood changes. Sometimes putting new pictures in your space inspires you in different ways. Just like rearranging your furniture does. I am in love with this idea!

Great Expectations? {Costa Rica}

So amazed by the sad beauty of this San José house. It immediately reminded me of “Great Expectations.” Just on the other side of that gate was a load of trash and a random toilet (as only toilets that are put out in front of one’s house can be). The house looked like it had been abandoned several years ago. I would so HGTV this house.

San José, the capital of Costa Rica, isn’t usually a tourist must– but precisely because of this, my husband and I thought we should check it out. After all, it’s a capital city for a reason. What we found was some beautiful architecture (like this house), some interesting book stores (with books in several different languages), and stunning cafés. Though not exactly European in feel, there are aspects of this city that reminded me of living in Madrid. People go to coffee shops not to work or sit on their computers, but to drink a coffee with friends. Or maybe to people watch. Pretty simple.

moving {pt. 2 & 3}

Well, the move is mostly moved. Things & more things, these were the most things I’ve ever had, and a long way to haul them.

The almost-magical lesson I learned through this chaotic event was that convincing a few friends to help you makes moving unbelievably quick and almost enjoyable. They also make the post-move pizza and beer much more celebratory. thank you!

Now, for help with the unpacking …

moving {pt.1}

I am beginning to prepare for my farmland adventure.

Somewhere in the not-too-distant future, I imagine myself gardening, picking apples off of trees and relaxing with my family on the grass. Then, a small bug flies near my eyes, obscuring these lovely visions.  I bat it out of the way, but it will not go. It tells me I have to pack all of my things, bit by bit, and drive them to the farm.

And so, since I can’t make the moving bug go away, I will do what it says. Piece by piece, trip by trip.

Yesterday I journeyed out to the land with a couple of friends. We burned sage to invite fresh, positive energy to the sturdy old house, then proceeded to bring a small batch of my things inside.

The adventure {always} begins {with an ending}.

the plants and people that came before me {a return}

Yes, I’m moving.

To a farm.

A farm with a lake and swallows in the barn, a cat and lots of plants breathing.

This is a very special farm. My great grandparents built it. My father was raised there. He’s an old man now. Too old to live alone, so I’m going to live with him.

In some ways I’ve willed such an opportunity (read “On Jobs and Delusions,” a piece I wrote for Thought Catalog). I do think having a close connection with your food source is radical and necessary in this society. This will be an adventure. I’ll float in the water and surround myself with plant-breath. Dad and I will garden, read and hopefully work up to keeping bees and chickens! Wish us luck.

Happy Plants {radiator // shelf}

My windowsill plants have been feasting on the summer sun and growing fast.  They needed new homes — in pots too big for the small ledge. I wanted to keep them in sight of that which they worship {the sun}, but a radiator was in the way of a furniture solution. After digging around in the remnants of forgotten projects, copper pipe and twine became my answer.
